A new app for food lovers has arrived in Birmingham – say hello to Wriggle.
The premise of the app is simple: find local restaurants, cafes and bars offering exclusive but time-limited deals to make eating out more affordable. There’s no naff chains, just hand-picked independent venues offering you tasty food and drink deals for less. These could be anything from a coffee to a three-course meal – there’s lots of options. Supporting and discovering local businesses and enjoying delicious grub – sounds pretty good, right?
How does it work?
The app itself is easy to download and simple to use. Select Birmingham as your city and enter a postcode to receive a list of deals closest to you. You can use a different postcode for day and night, so whether you’re at work or home you can see what’s available around you. Offers are shown to you based on proximity or cost, depending on what you think is more important.
Once you’ve found a ‘Wriggle’ you’re interested in, tap the image to learn more about the venue, what’s available as part of the deal and when it’s valid. All Wriggles are time-limited (so once it’s gone it’s gone) but most have a good window of opportunity to use it. Tap the app to pay for your deal, then all that’s left to do it turn up and enjoy it.
Two little tips for you: deals are more plentiful during the day, when the lunchtime offers are also available. And don’t forget, if you miss your allocated time slot your deal is no longer valid.
Why use Wriggle?
Whether you’re a not-at-all fussy meat eater or a vegan, there are options available to suit everyone. Some places offer takeaway as an option too, so if you’re in a rush you can still enjoy a cheeky discount. No vouchers need printing out and no money is paid at the venue (unless you purchase the extras Wriggle sometimes suggests) as it’s all done and dusted before you even sit down to eat.
Above all, though, you’re supporting quality local businesses (it’s always a joy to discover an awesome independent bar, cafe or restaurant you’ve perhaps previously overlooked) all while preventing food waste. Winner/winner! On top of all of that, when you use the app you can collect points to eventually redeem as cash against future purchases. Points can be earned by ordering, leaving feedback or by keeping an eye out for special multi-point deals.
Which venues are part of Wriggle?
The list is growing all the time, but you can expect to find bars, cafes, restaurants and delis across central Brum offering anything from street food to tasty tapas or canal-side cocktails. Whether you want a sit down meal for two or a takeaway doorstop sandwich to munch on your lunch break, there’s all sorts of places to enjoy. Here’s a few things I’ve enjoyed using Wriggle.
Vietnamese Street Kitchen
Based over in Brindleyplace, this independent restaurant is popular with the lunch crowd and offers up hot dishes like rice bowls, pho, and nibbles like spicy chicken wings. On my visit I used a Wriggle that saved me £3 and bagged me a bowl of noodle soup for just over a fiver, as long as I visited between 12-3pm that day. Loved the hearty beef broth and plump king prawns topping the nest of rice noodles.
I discovered Loki was on Wriggle just before having dinner at a nearby restaurant. This wine bar has a great buy one get one free deal on – two glasses of prosecco costs just £5 when you use the app, meaning you have a fiver spare to spend on the lovely deli meats and snacks available.
While I love the original Yorks in the city centre, the cafe within IKON Gallery is a beautiful space – and the food is just as good. I often take my laptop here for a working lunch, but I used Wriggle to try a breakfast option. I bagged this enormous hot smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with a latte for £8.50 (saving around £4.50) just by using the app – can’t argue with that.
The Bull’s Head
I usually only visit this pub for drinks, but being that I was on Broad Street for a cinema trip it seemed like an easy pit-stop for a bite to eat. I bought 2 of the sandwiches for £10 – saving me £4 – choosing the fish finger sarni, but there’s cold options available too as well as kati rolls.
Having spent the last few weeks getting to grips with this app, I have to say it’s genuinely worth having. The list of venues and offers continues to grow, the deals and points you end up collecting by using it mean it’s great for money saving, and it’s handy for discovering new or existing indies and pop ups that are offering delicious food and drink.
