Way back at the start of January (which seems about 9503 years ago) I popped a post up about some of the local independent restaurant deals that could be found in Brum during the most financially naff month of the year. One of those deals was at Opus, Cornwall Street.
The last time I visited this place was for a five course cheese and wine pairing dinner – I don’t actually remember leaving (make of that what you will) but I recall handing over a wedge of cash and having a jolly nice dinner. When I got wind of the January offer it made sense to return, with 3 courses available for the price of 2. I call that free dessert – and I’m absolutely fine with it.
My Leek and Haddock Fishcake starter was comfort food personified. A substantial crispy fishcake with delicate haddock flavour and plenty of chunks of the fish. The perfectly fluffy centre was enhanced by a 10/10 poached egg, and a rich butter sauce. If that’s wrong, I don’t want to be right – simple and classic.
If I’d known before how enormous the fishcake would’ve been I may not have chosen my main of Pig Cheeks with Garlic Mash, another hearty plate of food. But I did, and I have to say it was like a hug on a plate. Fork tender pieces of slow cooked meat, creamed spuds, with just enough garlic coming through to make you happy rather than repel vampires, and apple several ways to cut through all the richness. A perfect winter warmer.
A deconstructed Hazelnut Cheesecake finished both the meal and me off. If you like rich desserts with plenty of texture this is a great shout. The roasted spheres of juicy pear, soft salted caramel and nutty granola all complemented each other, and I have no idea what’s in that brittle but it’s ruddy lovely.
Some people say Opus feels quite corporate (to some extent they’re probably right) but I rather like the place; the cooking is accomplished and the service is both warm and slick. The a la carte menu changes regularly with 3 courses usually costing £37.95 – it’s quite pricey but portions are hearty.

Disclosure: I paid in full for all food and drink – the 3 for 2 courses was available to anyone during January. All words and photos are my own.
