Brief post today on Legna – the second restaurant in Birmingham to be opened by Aktar Islam.
Replacing Mi Amore, the opening of this new Italian fine dining restaurant and bar has been hotly anticipated, especially considering the success of Aktar’s first venue, Opheem, just yards away. As you can see from the photos below, the dining space is absolutely beautiful, with a separate bar area for drinks and bar snacks.
Although not operating on full opening hours until early January, I got a chance to have a glimpse inside and get a feel for the flavours and dining experience this talented chef is offering here. We liked it so much we’re booking in for dinner on NYE – which should tell you all you need to know really.
As part of the soft launch service we ate from a tasting menu, but if that’s anything to go by the main menu itself is going to be off the charts. As we worked through the meal the flavours managed to be both robust and delicate; fresh but hearty. I’ve never experienced Italian-inspired fine dining before, but I like it. A lot.
Speaking to Aktar after dinner, it was great to hear how he sources much of the produce (right down to the aged balsamic) direct from contacts he’s made and nurtured in Italy. There’s passion and love behind this new venture, and no expense is being spared to make sure you have a beautiful meal. Every detail is considered both on and off the plate (check out the divine crockery and bespoke lampshades in the restaurant for a start), and the staff are on the ball.
I’m so excited to return in a few weeks* to get to grips with the a la cart menu, but in the meantime here’s a few photos from the tasting menu. Special shout out to the incredible burrata, and the beef and wild boar pappardelle – I’m confident we’ll be seeing that on the main menu come January.
*Full review of Legna coming in January once we’ve revisited.

Disclosure: I attended a soft launch preview evening arranged by Legna Birmingham. We paid for our drinks and left a tip. Words and photos are mine.
