Digbeth is a part of Birmingham that people seem to either love or hate. Over the years I’ve worked in and around the area so have come to know and love a few local spots for food.
Below you will find some of my favourite places in Digbeth to grab a bite to eat, all of which can be found just a 10 minute walk from the Bull Ring. Better yet, these are all mostly independents so you’ll be supporting local businesses. Winner!
Rico Libre (tapas)
If you like small plates and sharing food with friends you’ll love Rico Libre, the brightly coloured tapas restaurant on Barn Street. The food is fantastic and very reasonably priced, and you can take your own booze. It’s open every night (apart from Monday) and pre booking is essential.
A prettier addition to the Custard Factory, Kanteen is a gorgeous cafe open daily for brunch and lunch as well as coffee and cake. There’s options for vegans and the hot food selection (also available for takeaway) is colourful and well executed.
Old Crown (pub grub)
Scooby snack style sandwiches and big burgers are on offer at Birmingham’s oldest pub. There’s lots to choose from, they’re on the Independent Birmingham card, and there’s food offers on throughout the week, including Taco Tuesdays.
The Anchor (toasties & beer
Grilled cheese sandwich anyone? That’s what you’ll find to soak up all the craft ale you smash at this popular boozer. They also run weekly quizzes, so if you fancy a cracking toasted sarni and some friendly competition take a trot and get anchored.
The Warehouse Cafe (vegan & veggie)
Vegetarians and vegans rave about this award winning backstreet favourite for its homely food and commitment to quality ingredients. There’s plenty of wholesome and healthy options available, regular specials, and they do a bloody good veggie burger. Bonus: it’s literally five minutes walk from the Bull Ring.
Digbeth Dining Club (street food)
Let’s not forget the absolute wonder that is Digbeth Dining Club when it comes to feeding your belly. Found at Spotlight it’s recently had a relaunch and now includes more traders, live music and, best of all, it’s open on Thursdays as well as Fridays and Saturdays. Here you’ll find award-winning burgers, pizza, kebabs, smoked meats, waffles, and so much more. Follow DDC on social media to see in advance which vendors will be there on your chosen night.
Ghetto Golf (snacks)
Right next door to Digbeth Dining Club, Ghetto Golf isn’t your average mini golf venue. Here you’ll find Slims BBQ Express, a smokehouse offering American BBQ food with an Eastern twist. Expect Korean-style fried chicken, chilli cheese fries and pulled meat burgers. There’s also a cocktail bar if you fancy getting your drunk golf on.
