As those of you who live or work in Birmingham all know, on Friday the weather was absolutely beautiful. From the moment I woke up at 7am the sun was shining and Birmingham, once again, managed to look like one of the most beautiful cities in the UK.
I decided to get outside and enjoy this unseasonably hot weather (before the rain came!) taking my phone and laptop into the city centre to work in the sunshine. Twitter reminded me that the Brindleyplace Summer Market was on so during my lunch break I headed over to the popular Brum spot to check out what foodie stalls had set up in the square.
Around 10 stands were selling produce or freshly cooked grub, and my first pit stop was to Spice Fever. Offering 3 types of freshly cooked samosas (including meat and veggie options) I couldn’t resist trying the lamb parcel.
The samosa was a good size and crispy having come fresh from the bubbling oil, and was packed with tasty filling. The lamb mince was juicy and flavourful, lightly spiced to warm the tongue without knocking your socks off. Truly delicious – and great to hear from the owner that they’re all handmade by his mum and sister.
Fulfilled from my snack I mooched around the rest of the stalls to see what other offerings were available. Being that it was only 11:30am the square was quite quiet, although I’m sure come lunchtime – when all the hungry office workers leave in search of food – it would have become extremely busy.
What was nice to see, despite there only being a handful of stalls, was the variety of street food traders in attendance.
I hope this becomes a more regular event as I’m sure my other half would absolutely love a few hours in the sunshine sampling some of Birmingham’s best street food bites, and quite honestly I need an excuse to eat more lamb samosas – pronto.
