Review | Gas Street Social, Mailbox

Posted on September 6, 2020September 14, 2020 by Laura

Gas Street Social is back open in Mailbox, serving up tasty brunches and lovely service. The story of how I came to know this is mildly ridiculous. In the typical haphazard fashion you’ve all come to know and love (she assumes) over the last few years, the reason for my visit was being a bit…

Review | Ngopi, Dale End (City Centre)

Posted on August 17, 2020August 17, 2020 by Laura

I think we may have a new contender for best lunch under £10 in Birmingham city centre thanks to Ngopi. If you’ve not visited this cafe you won’t be alone – it’s hidden away down a street on the (let’s say…) rougher end of town and is often overlooked. But that’s a big mistake, because…

How to support your independent restaurants, cafes and bars after lockdown

Best places for vegan food in Birmingham (picked by actual vegans)

I’m increasingly asked about vegan food in Birmingham, but it may have come to your attention that I, Laura McEwan, am not a vegan. I’m pretty far from being a vegan because 75% of my diet is cheese and I keep the city’s burger joints in business. But I like veggie food and I often…

‘Birmingham’s smallest coffee shop’ opens in The Oasis markets

Posted on February 21, 2020March 5, 2020 by Laura

Birmingham’s ‘smallest coffee shop’ has opened in (everyone’s favourite emo dungeon) The Oasis markets. The Coffee Bar is located on the top floor (which weirdly is actually street level) of the markets, and is an independent start up. Head past the Nirvana tshirts and suspicious looking pipes and you’ll find the bar at the back….

Sarni in the sunshine anyone? ☀️ Took myself Sarni in the sunshine anyone? ☀️

Took myself to @chapterbham earlier this week to get a few hours of work done while the sun shone on pretty Edgbaston. They’ve got a lovely terrace for food and drink overlooking Greenfield Crescent, including this whopping breakfast sandwich (perfect to kick off the weekend) for £6.50. You can now get 10% off the bill anytime with your @independentbirmingham app too ✌🏼
Happy Friday! Flashback to an absolutely stunning Happy Friday! Flashback to an absolutely stunning lunch at @restaurantadams earlier this week.

Food, wine, service - everything was pretty much perfect.

Have a flick through the photos and you’ll see why @eatwithellen and I had such a great time on Tuesday.

Don’t overlook the lunch menu available here; you can dine like a rockstar at a very reasonable price.

Have you dined at Adam’s? Let me know what you thought about the experience 👇🏼

For the sake of conversation feel free to tell me what shape of pasta is your favourite… unless it’s penne. In which case just keep scrolling.

Have a lush day ✌🏼
Sun’s back - everyone outside for a picky tea! ☀️

Aware the #pickytea narrative is ridiculous (it’s mostly beige things out of packets and pickled things from jars, let’s be honest) but I’ve now had so many of them I’ve decided to dedicate a post to the best of summer so far.

Shout out to my friend Sapreena who will no doubt be devastated to not see an overcooked boiled egg ripped apart by midget fingers on any of these but summer isn’t over yet 😉

Which would you pick from 1-5? You can’t eat them anyway so it doesn’t really matter but it’s nice to chat innit ✌🏼

Last night a load of us packed into the gig room at @theflapper for a night of live music (curated by the brilliant @moseleyfolkfestival) and meeting new people. We had two ace sets from @christiereevesmusic and @boattorow and the beers flowed.

Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket and came along - we raised almost £600 for @sifafiresideofficial and I couldn’t be happier to send them a big fat wedge of cash.

Massive love to The Flapper and Moseley Folk Festival for agreeing to collaborate on this social event with BYB and trusting me to get a crowd of reprobates to enjoy it.

Here’s some of the highlights, mostly captured by my long-suffering husband. Now I need a massive nap…
Birmingham is ready for the Commonwealth Games and Birmingham is ready for the Commonwealth Games and we are looking sexyyyy.

The city is awash with colour, and Perry paraphernalia, stages and big screens are all in place so anyone can be a part of the action.

Things kick off officially with the opening ceremony (had a preview; it’s ace) tomorrow night before 2 weeks of sport and celebrations at sites across the city and beyond.

Sunny Brum is buzzing and I for one am loving it. What are you excited about as the games roll into town? 🤩

Get the tram with me! Those that have been here f Get the tram with me!

Those that have been here for a while will know I have been beyond frustrated with the whole tram situation in Brum. From the never ending saga of them working (…or not) to the delayed extension to Edgbaston; it’s fair to say it’s not been smooth sailing for those blue buggers.

As I write this (and let’s be honest, it could be out of date within 24hours 😂) the trams are all gravy baby and yesterday I finally got to hop on at Five Ways and travel to JQ. It’s efficient, eco friendly and gives you a mini tour of the city centre.

Having a stop at the end of my street is glorious, I can’t lie. If that makes me a sad case I really don’t care. So here’s me enjoying a little trip on a sunny Saturday like the excitable toddler I am. Tickets in zone 1 are £2 - you pay on the tram.

Btw, this is not an advert or remotely endorsed by West Midlands Metro, or Andy Street for that matter - we are not pals and I’m pretty sure he hates me. But with the Commonwealth Games starting this week and a proper buzz in the air, I just wanted to show a bit of lighthearted positivity 👋🏼

Have a gorgeous Sunday!

Big fan of the @allgreekstreetfood gyros (I go for a pork and chicken mix; swap the mustard and ketchup for tzatziki) as a grab and go option. It’s right by New Street station and beats anything you’ll buy in there to scoff on your travels. These are about £7 and very filling. Also, let’s be honest: chips and bread is always a decent combo. Smash or pass? 👀

We started with bubbly in the wine cellar, before enjoying and a sharing platter of treats from the starters in Bistro du Vin upstairs followed by mains from the brand new summer menu and desserts to share (with a cheese board, obviously) and lots of wine.

The new summer menu has a slightly reduced offering compared to previous years but with renewed emphasis on seasonal French dishes at a very reasonable price point. Highlights for me included the chicken liver parfait, sea trout gravalax, and tarte au jambon et à l'ail.

I love this hotel and (as you may recognise from my posts over the years) I’ve stayed here many times and always enjoyed the warm service and hospitality. The Bubble Bar within the hotel is one of my favourites for late night cocktails, too, with lots of choice and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for midweek meet ups with friends.

The bistro and bar are both undergoing a makeover at the moment and from the preview I got yesterday it’s a beautifully modern update. Here’s a little taster of what you can expect if you book a bistro visit.

Fancy a free glass of fizz? 🥂 If you book a table in the bistro quoting ‘Bite Your Brum’ you’ll receive a complimentary glass of bubbly with your meal. Offer ends 31st Aug 2022.

Summer lunches made epic by the team at @hivebham. Summer lunches made epic by the team at @hivebham. One of the best hidden gems we have, you’ll find this cafe up in JQ serving up light bites and seasonal specials.

This is the feta and broad bean frittata with salad, herby mayo and roasted baby potato slices. An absolutely gorgeous lunch for under £7 and a lovely cool space to enjoy some shade. It’s open 7:30am to 3pm Tue-Fri and you’ll find it on Vittoria Street.

You can also buy freshly based sourdough and pastries to go, plus it’s a training café and bakery that provides valuable work experience and training for local college students so your also supporting young people in the community by going. Bosh.
