One December night not so long ago, during a particularly vicious bout of hangryitis, I found myself eating pizza at OTTO. Coming across this little pizzeria was a complete accident, fuelled largely by a mutual desire to get out of the winter rain and my inability to go more than two hours without food.
Situated opposite Bloc Hotel between Jewellery Quarter and St Paul’s, it’s run by the same folk behind the 8ft Grocer. Offering 8 wood fired pizzas (plus two changeable specials) and a selection of sharing boards, it’s a small but perfectly formed independent set up. I loved the exposed brick and local artist artwork dotted across the walls.
We opted for a bottle of Capilla de Barro (£21) – a lovely Argentinian Malbec – and some Mixed Olives (£3) to start.
We shared the Nduja Sausage and Mushroom (£9); number two on the main menu. Arriving within 10 minutes our pizza had a decent amount of toppings, most notably the spicy ground sausage, and a crust that begged to be dipped in the homemade chilli oil adorning all tables.
I’m usually not that fussed about the crust, but this crispy and tasty offering is well worth savouring.
Being that we were sharing we only had the one pizza as a snack, but agreed on a return visit we’d have one each. There’s some other delicious sounding toppings including Fennel Sausage and Blue Cheese (£9.50) and Roasted Aubergine (£8.50); in fact the veggie options are quite impressive there.
Will be back for sure. Honest, filling and interesting pizzas, plus a lovely group of people running the show, make this place a winner.
