If like me you’re a fan of Hotel du Vin, the new lunch concept it has rolled out might be up your street. Bistro du Vin is now offering an Express Lunch option for people looking for a delicious but fast lunchtime treat.
Available 12-2pm Monday to Saturday, the new lunch concept launched at the end of September and I popped along to see what it was all about.
As part of the new lunchtime offering, guests can choose from a selection of four hot mains, with or without a visit to the Deli Table. A variety of Mediterranean style salads, cured fish and cold meats can form a starter (£6.50) to accompany a hot main, or you can simply choose to dine entirely from the deli for £12.50.
Having brought along one of my lovely bridesmaids, Lauren, we were shown the available dishes at the table, and having seen the selection we decided to combine the deli table starter plate with a hot main.
The choice of cold salads is, as you’d expect from HDV, fabulous and includes seasonal flavours and well thought out, fresh dishes. It’s akin to their popular Sunday Lunch farmers market table, something I’ve enjoyed previously. It’s also great if you’re looking to make healthy choices at lunchtime. The table is packed with vibrant and colourful platters of vegetables and salads – if this can’t convert you to healthy eating I don’t know what will.
For a starter plate you are pick any three options. I struggled to choose what to add to my plate (everything looked lovely) eventually picking the Chilli Aubergine, Smoked Salmon, and Chargrilled Asparagus, Courgette and Halloumi Salad. It’s also a very generous amount of food for a starter.
On to main and we both opted for the Onglet Steak Frites (£14.50) which arrived quickly. It’s a simple dish but sometimes underwhelming in lesser restaurants, however you can always rely on HDV to make it a bit more special.
Served medium as requested, the thick cut of beef was flavourful, tender and very juicy. The generous portion of blushing meat was delicious, as was the peppercorn sauce. Lauren opted for garlic butter instead of sauce, and we both really enjoyed the main.
A trip to Bistro du Vin wouldn’t be complete without a glass of wine, and as usual the staff were on hand to recommend some excellent choices. The Rioja Reserva (£8.50 for a large glass) was a smooth red, with berry notes and layers of oak. It complemented the beef nicely.
We completed the meal with coffee and dessert. The creamy Creme Brûlée (£6.50) was outstanding. The crisp top spread over a vast surface area meant more crunchy sugar, and that’s the best part of the pudding anyway, let’s be honest. The Pot au Chocolate (£6.50) was rich and smooth, although I can’t deny I was pleased with my Brûlée choice.
The staff were attentive, knowledgeable and happy to talk us through the menu and wine list, making suggestions where appropriate. You can’t fault the service at this restaurant, that’s for sure.
I have always been, and continue to be, a great fan of this hotel and its amenities, especially the restaurant. I have dined at Bistro du Vin numerous times over the years, and have always found the level of service and quality of the food excellent. This new Express Lunch idea offers affordable luxury, and also being available on a Saturday as well as weekdays makes it accessible for everyone.
