I love Pushkar’s on Broad Street. The food and service are always outstanding, and despite being in a part of Brum that many of us choose to avoid (Saturday nights on Broad St are pretty grim unless you’re single and 18, let’s be honest) the restaurant looks and feels quite fancy.
Ian and I first came here last year. We’re Cineworld card holders so often have to walk the length of BS to get to the cinema. Having always commented on now good the smells are coming from Pushkar’s, one weekend we decided to try the food – and it was brilliant. Like, life changing/can I eat that again now please? good.
As well as the tasty food and boutique surroundings, the staff are marvellous. They can’t do enough for you and are relentlessly professional and polite. With that in mind, I decided to spend my birthday meal (on Thursday) at Pushkar’s – and I wasn’t disappointed.
We started the meal with mixed popadoms and a sauce tray, including a cooling yogurt sauce, spiced onions and mango chutney. A delicious way to prep the belly for a tasty main course.
For my main I chose a slow cooked lamb and spinach curry. The meat was beautiful and tender, with a rich but tasty sauce that was just the right amount of spicy – I’m in love with this dish, even if it does cost £13.99.
We chose not to have starters on this occasion as we’d eaten a large lunch, but decided to order two sides, including mushroom pilau rice and a garlic naan.
The rice was cooked perfectly and the garlic naan crispy rather than stodgy – we shared the two items and it was more than enough with a main dish.
My partner had the minced lamb curry (which I tried too) and it was rich, delicious and smoky. There was also chunks of lamb nestled within the sauce which were as tender as in my dish.
The food was outstanding and when I mentioned it was my birthday our server couldn’t do enough for me. At the end of the meal I was even gifted a beautiful chocolate brownie which I thought was a very sweet gesture.
I really rate this restaurant, and if you’re looking for a delicious Indian eating experience outside of the usual baltis found around the city centre I’d recommend this place. It’s not cheap, compared to balti houses, but the food and service are far superior.
Thanks for a lovely birthday experience, Pushkar.
