Coffee and a blast from the past @ Yumm Cafe

Before I worked from home, I worked in a city centre office. Well, I say city centre, I mean Digbeth, and like many creative folk who work in this part of the city centre, my office is situated within the custard factory hub.

I always really enjoyed working in this creative space, despite the fact that we had mice at one point in the Zellig building, but one of my favourite things about working within this complex was Yumm Cafe.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I went and grabbed a coffee and lunch at this place, they living on their caffeine fuelled drinks got me through some pretty stressful times editing a magazine.

The Custard Factory is a pretty unique little place in the heart of Birmingham city centre. I have many fond memories of the place, especially as I had my 30th birthday at what was Alfie Birds, although in recent years many of the shops and bars within the complex have moved out, leaving it a little under used and seemingly unloved.

There’s clearly some fairly major building work currently going on in the main square too.

Having said that, during one of my little walks in the sunshine this week I stumbled upon my old faithful, Yumm Cafe, and popped in with my laptop to do some work (with a quick coffee, of course) for old time’s sake.

The lime green still remains (I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing..) and the selection of coffee is pretty much the same as when I worked here – 2 years ago – as is the lunch menu. From memory they did pretty good chicken burritos on Thursdays, which when I asked was told they still do. I guess if it ain’t broke don’t fix it..?

The staff were polite and attentive, and more than happy to swap regular milk for a soy milk alternative, and my cappuccino was deliciously foamy and was really hot. There was also a nice selection of cakes and sugary slices at the counter which looked absolutely delicious.

It was nice to pop in and take a look at somewhere I’ve previously spent a great deal of time, however so much of the rest of the building and people also I’m not sure it’ll be somewhere that I’m in a rush to go back to again.
