*Quick read incoming* I’ve talked about the best boozy happy hours in Birmingham before, but there’s another you need to know about – if you’re a fan of shellfish.
The oyster happy hour runs 3pm – 6pm from Tuesday to Friday at The Oyster Club and represents ridiculous value for money. During happy hour you can get the ‘oyster of the day’ for just £1, meaning you can half a dozen for £6. Let that sink in. SIX QUID.
The full array of lovelies are available for you to see at the far end of the bar. Fresh as can be and shucked to order, the raw oysters are beautifully presented. You can have them dressed or in tempura batter but that costs a little extra. On the last occasion I visited the happy hour option was the Wild Mersea oysters, sustainably fished from the Essex coast.
The Oyster Club is definitely the most attractive venue in Temple Street, maybe one of the prettiest in the city centre. Hues of blue and neutral shades run throughout the furnishings across the two floors, making it an inviting space to socialise with friends or (in my case) get some work done with a nice bite to eat. I personally prefer to sit up in the brighter bar area, but there’s tables with comfortable high chairs as well as more intimate tables downstairs.
The service is polished (as you’d expect from the same team behind Adam’s on neighbouring Waterloo Street) and the happy hour makes oyster eating both a pleasure and a bargain. During this period 6 oysters and flute of something fizzy will set you back just £14, and to me that’s worth shouting about. You can also get 15% off the bill with a valid Independent Birmingham card on certain days of the week – bonus.
As you’d expect from a fish restaurant there’s plenty more on the full menu to chomp your way through, including skate wing with capers, crispy fried squid, roasted Dover sole and a creamy fish pie. I’ll be returning soon to try the main menu delights because frankly now I’ve tried the chips I’ve not stopped thinking about eating them again with the battered halibut. Seriously, whether you come for oysters or for fish, just order the chips. Order them all.
