Here’s the festive dilemma: you want to eat lovely things but you don’t want to spend a fortune. You and me both.
With Christmas almost here you may be laying off the nice lunches and evenings in the pub to ensure you’re not left selling a kidney come 2019. But what if I told you there were some ace week day deals available in independent restaurants across Birmingham throughout December that could keep you fed and watered without an awkward chat with your bank manager/mum?
Here’s a daily deal to ensure your midweek happiness all the way up to Christmas and beyond. Every day has a different type of food and the price per person is always £10 and under – better yet, these are all independent restaurants and pubs, so you’re helping hardworking locals make a living too. Bonus.
I defy anyone to find a better deal on a wintery Monday than the 2 for £10 burger offer at The Old Crown in Digbeth. The pub has a real fire, it’s nowhere near the German Market and the locals are (mostly) dead friendly. There’s five burgers to choose from, including beef, chicken and veggie options, each coming with a choice of chips and a side of slaw.
Like pizza? Enjoy a beer? Get yourself to The Distillery on the second day of the working week and you can enjoy two massive pizzas and two bottles of beer for £20. There’s a small but decent choice of toppings, especially if you like meat, and plenty of infused olive oils to dip your crusts in. Tuesday: nailed.
I know I bang on about Laghi’s Deli a lot but there is (currently) no better place to chomp on Italian food in this city. All pasta is made in-house and they focus on authentic, delicious flavours. The lunch deal is £8.99 including a soft drink with a choice of pasta, pizza or salad from a generous menu. I find Wednesday the least busy day to drop in for a top value midweek lunch.
Fancy something a bit more healthy? How about sushi in a beautiful restaurant with just ten seats? Gaijin Sushi knocks out, in my opinion, the best sushi in the city centre, with the owner having a real passion for his work. On Thursdays diners can enjoy 30% off futomaki sushi rolls, which include crispy prawn and blow torched eel.
Yes – you can even get a mega meal on a shoestring on a Friday, in this case via a Spanish tapas restaurant. How does 2 for £7 or 3 for £10 on small plates grab you? El Borracho de Oro in Edgbaston actually runs this fabulous deal Monday to Friday, and it includes all your classic tapas treats from a select menu. It’s a bargain and the food is honest and tasty.
Disclosure: All words and photos are mine and I paid for all dishes that were included in this Independent restaurants blog. This isn’t a sponsored post/ad. I have no affiliation to any venue included – I’m just trying to be helpful.
