Veganuary gets more popular every year but as we hit 2021 heading straight into a lockdown, this year most of us will be following plant based eating from home.
I’m personally choosing to eat plant based 2 days a week this year, rather than veganuary only, but whatever your plan or reasons for it you may be looking for cafes and restaurants specialising in vegan food in Birmingham to help keep you on the right path – and give you time off cooking.
With that in mind, today’s quick read post for you includes a handful of local places that (predominantly) offer plant based meals. As all hospitality is currently closed for dining in, I’ve also included whether you can collect or enjoy delivery from the venues below.
Alas we’ve lost some venues in the 2020 bloodbath and others you may expect to see here have remained closed, but if you think I’ve missed somewhere important do let me know.
Plant and Pulse
For those looking for vegan lunches and dinners, you can’t go wrong with Plant and Pulse based in The Minories in the city centre. Whether you fancy a naughty burger (the spicy pakora burger is a proper treat) or one of their famous gut health salad boxes full of crunchy veg and fermented favourites, everything is made on site from scratch each morning and is very well priced.
Availability: Open Mon-Sat for pre ordered collections and Delivery via Deliveroo. On Fridays they also offer free home delivery within a 5 mile radius from the shop – you can book a slot by DM on Instagram.
Land x Pineapple Club
Great Western Arcade’s vegetarian and vegan restaurant, Land, has teamed up with neighbouring cocktail bar, Pineapple Club, to launch a limited veganuary offer. The at-home boxes include a two course meal and either cocktails or wine. Great option if you fancy something a bit luxurious this January.
Availability: collaboration sets are limited and you’ll need to order online through Pineapple Club’s website.
Vegan Munch
Think you can’t have a kebab while eating plant based? Wrong. Locally owned Vegan Munch specialise in shawarma, doner wraps, loaded nachos and fries, and burgers. You can usually get something naughty for pud too.
Availability: Open daily for lunch and dinner. You can collect takeaway or order from Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo.
Damascena
Absolutely loads of options for plant based eating at this locally owned and run business. There’s venues in Jewellery Quarter, Snow Hill and Harborne, and you can get your hands on Middle Eastern dishes like big mezzes. Not entirely vegan but a lot of the menu is.
Availability: open daily from breakfast to dinner, and offers both collection and delivery through Deliveroo.
Pulp Vegan (The Plough)
OK. Another not strictly vegan venue, let’s be honest, but this Harborne pub has launched a whole vegan brand to satisfy everyone this January. You’ll find burgers, pizzas and spicy cauliflower bites at The Plough, plus there’s a vegan ice cream available from local heroes Odi & Moo.
Availability: open 7 days a week for pre ordered collections and Deliveroo delivery.
Biff’s
Part of the BrewDog family, Biff’s is all about saucy burgers and crispy fried jackfruit. They also offer sides like sweet potato fries so you can make a proper feast of it all.
Availability: Available 7 days a week for curb side pick up and delivery.
BAHA
Bit of a secret for you – the BAHA gals have got a new permanent home (I’m sworn to secrecy for now on the exact location) after various pop ups across the city last year. The new brick and mortar restaurant is due to open this month (obviously for takeaway only initially) and will be serving up vegan junk food and more.
Availability: opening date TBC. Keep your eyes peeled on their socials for news and updates.
