Throughout August, 1565 (the bar located in the Park Regis Hotel) is running a glorious cocktail promotion. From classics to more daring choices, a different cocktail special is being offered every day for just a fiver.
Every day this month a specific cocktail is available for the bargain price of £5 – instead of £8.50 – with some seriously summery sounding drinks including the Banana Colada (Sat 5th) shaken to order. For the more adventurous, a Wasabi Mary (Tue 8th) could be a good shout. Check out the full calendar below!
Despite the unseasonably awful weather, I decided to grab my pal George and head to the hotel to try out some of the cocktails this week, planning my visit carefully around the Rhubarb Margarita (Weds 2nd) because.. well, because margs are life. The hotel itself, despite being next door to Five Ways roundabout, is absolutely beautiful inside and offers all sorts of food and drink-based fun for guests and visitors. Like the rest of the hotel, the bar offers a modern and contemporary ambience with a boutique feel. There’s also a cracking outside terrace to enjoy – when the sun is actually shining.
Taking the lift to the reception floor, we grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered the ‘cocktail of the day’. Anyone who regularly reads my blog will know I’m a big fan of margaritas (so much so I’m having them instead of champagne at my wedding) so I was excited to try the rhubarb one offered at 1565. Unfortunately the rhubarb purée had gone walkies but I was made a regular version, as requested, instead and it was divine. Having had a truly awful version of this cocktail earlier in the evening elsewhere, this was honestly a bloody excellent margarita. Decent amount of tequila, good kick of sourness and a rim half salted and half drenched in lime juice – wonderful.
Our friendly bar tender, Cristian, also introduced us to the rest of the £5 menu and guided us through the classic and quirky cocktails that would be on offer throughout the month. He explained the menu is designed to reflect the hotel’s eclectic guests from all over the world, and proudly offers something for everyone. On a side note, Cristian is a credit to the bar; a real character, naturally charming and funny. He talked us through the making of all three of our drinks and spoke with real joy and passion about cocktails and working in the hospitality industry. He’s a great host and a lovely chap.
Next up George opted for an Old Fashioned which we both agreed was also very well made and balanced, and we also sampled an Insomnia Martini. Garnished with a few coffee beans, this sumptuous mix of vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso was rich, indulgent and a tiny bit creamy – just perfect.
I’ve been to various events in the bar and restaurant since it opened – including a fabulous gin afternoon tea – and the staff always make you feel special. The £5 cocktail promotion runs throughout August; I’m planning on heading back at the end of the month for the Strawberries and Cream Caipirinha. Find out more on their Twitter page.
